On April 12, 2017, PAWIS was formally recognized as a finalist for the 2017 Bayaning Samahang Pilipino Award (“Filipino Organizational Hero Award”) sa North America. The Bayaning Pilipino Awards recognizes heroes who demonstrate the Filipino values of humanitarianism, industry, determination and dedication to public service. It is intended to hold in high public esteem “existing heroes who have rendered service to the Filipino people.”
PAWIS is honored to be selected as a finalist, among youth and other organizations doing important work for Filipinos and the wider community around mental health, hunger and homelessness, and civic engagement, among others.
Connecting with these bayanis (“heroes”) strengthens PAWIS’s resolve to continue serving the people, and empowering, organizing, and mobilizing workers and immigrants. Especially given the current social and political landscape, it is more important than ever that Filipinos unite with all peoples to defend our communities and fight for human rights both in the US and in the Philippines. Together, we must tackle the root causes of forced migration in the Philippines — joblessness, poverty, landlessness, and government corruption.
